The city itself was founded by Thomas Polk, in 1755. Years later the tiny town grew into Charlotte, and most of its history happened during the American Revolution. Charlotte's well known nick name was in turn generated from this mishap for the general, and he proclaimed the city "The Hornets Nest", claiming in a famous quote that Charlotte was a "Hornets nest of rebellion".
